Jade In the Press: OneTrueFan Player of the Day

Hey guys, how many of you are fans of OneTrueFan?

Recently, while reading Benefit Cosmetics’ blog, I noticed a small bar at the bottom of the page with several mini avatars and a message prompting me to sign in. I thought it was an interesting widget so I signed in using my Facebook account. Next thing I knew, I was showing up on the bar along with the others. The screenshot below shows the widget – see the first avatar? That’s my display picture. So… what’s happening?

It turns out that OneTrueFan is a social sharing widget which allows you to, well, share the sites you visit! When you become a registered OneTrueFan user (they call you a “player”), you’ll automatically show up in the bar at the bottom of the sites you visit, called the “player bar”, along with the other players who are browsing (or have browsed) the same site you’re on.

For example, I clicked to share Benefit’s blog with the world using the player bar. A pop-up box like this appeared, and I clicked on the “Share Now” button.

After I’ve shared the page, everyone else who waves their cursor over my avatar will be able to see my recent shares. See? “Secret Life of a Benefit Gal” shows up as a recently shared page when I mouseover my avatar. Similarly, when I mouseover other players’ avatars, I’m able to see their recent shares.

Each player has a profile on OneTrueFan. Each time you share a site, become a fan, basically carry out activities using the OneTrueFan widget, you earn points and patches (kind of reminds me of Foursquare!). Here’s my Player Log.

With the plethora of social media tools out there, what makes OneTrueFan stand out? For starters, you’ll be able to check out the people who are on the same site and which other sites they recently recommended. How’s that for discovering new content? :)

All players compete to be the biggest fan of the site by earning points for frequent visits and sharing pages. The ultimate fan earns the title of “The One True Fan” and a spot on the right side of the player bar (kind of like mayorship on Foursquare, KWIM?). You know you’re on your way to earning that title when you show up in the leaderboard on the player bar – only the top 10 fans get there! If you love OneTrueFan, you can always install a browser AddOn, or get the site widget.

Well, I’m just getting started, so expect to see more patches and points on my profile! :P

And I was really surprised to see that I’d been featured as OneTrueFan’s player of the day – see screenshot below! Click here to read the awesome writeup. Thank you OneTrueFan for the feature! :)

Quoting OneTrueFan,

OneTrueFan is not a social network in the traditional sense, in that social networks attempt to localize an experience and/or lock users into a single social graph. OneTrueFan is the anti-network, bringing to light the communities that already exist at your favorite sites, with no additional effort on your part.

I like how they described themselves as “the anti-network”. And I can’t agree more with “no additional effort on your part” – seriously, you should check out OneTrueFan. Share effortlessly, discover new content, meet like-minded individuals, and have fun while you’re surfing!

Find OneTrueFan on Facebook and follow them on Twitter to receive the latest news!
